Captain Planet and the Ramblin' Wrek at Earth Day 2008 |
|
This year's 11th Annual Earth Day Celebration surpassed everyone's expectations - including the planning committee! The attendance of thousands of people from Georgia Tech and the surrounding Atlanta community, as well as visitors, beat last year's attendance estimate.
There were 61 booth participants providing information on environmentally friendly programs, products and services. Over 1,250 people went through the Earth Day Maze and they made a commitment to make changes in their lives and environment. There were also over 3,000 energy saving bulbs distributed to this year's attendees.
Media coverage of this year’s Earth Day included on site presence of local TV stations WXIA TV – Channel 11. There were also print articles in Georgia Tech's Technique and The Whistle.
Sponsorship this year reached an all-time high and included companies such as Ford Motor Company and The Coca Cola Company. Leading the list of sponsors was Georgia Tech's Institute for Sustainable Systems (formerly ISTD). Click here to see the entire list of sponsors.
One final highlight of the event was the first Sustainable Fashion Show and Clothing Swap held during Think Green Week leading up to Earth Day. The fashion show featured clothing made of recycled materials which was modeled by Georgia Tech's students, faculty and staff. For the clothing swap, students were encouraged to donate gently used clothing items in exchange for other pieces of clothing.
